If you were to travel back in time like Marty McFly and walk into the expansive high school library where I was working in the year 2007 and told me that in 2017 I was going to be writing for one of the most famous, most respected, and most successful marketing consultants on the face of the planet… I would have said you were crazy.
I would have been as skeptical and disbelieving as if you’d told me you were an alien from Saturn, wearing a human body. (The kids would have liked that though!)
Yet it’s true. One day I was helping reluctant teenagers do research to get good grades on standardized tests…
…and practically the next day I was communicating with clients of a big-name marketing guru.
Well… maybe it wasn’t the next day. And it wasn’t a straight shot.
It all happened because of my constant quest to become a better teacher. I did what any nerd would do: I studied how people learn.
Knowing from my own observations and experiences that there are a gazillion factors influencing student success, I felt both vindicated and deeply curious when I discovered the true power of the unconscious mind to take over our thoughts and actions.
I’d never really heard this before! It was mind-blowing!
I suddenly began to understand why some students managed to do well despite tough personal situations, while other students, who seemingly had everything going for them, were on self-destructive paths.
Gradually, the light bulb came on, and I could see that there was so much more I could do with this revelation. There were so many more people I could help…
So I did a totally stupid and risky thing. I walked away from a perfectly good teaching job to start my own business as a certified coach: parenting, mental toughness, and Strategic Intervention.
Sure, I had a few clients at first, but it was taking time to get going. Just like when it’s an hour past my dog’s dinner time and he attaches himself to my leg – after all, he doesn’t want me to forget he’s there… and he’s HUNGRY – I had a tremendous need that just had to be met: I had to pay my bills.
By this time I’d published the first of my two books, had written around 150 blog articles on teaching, and had published articles in peer-reviewed journals. I figured if I could do anything to make some money on my own, it would be writing.
Fortunately, I’d figured out by that time that to write for the internet, you have to write at a fourth-grade level. Not that YOU are at a fourth-grade level, but you know… other people are. And they don’t want to be bothered with big words.
So I had learned to STOP writing for academics, and write, instead, for average Joes and Janes.
That’s about the time when I applied for a writing job with Todd Brown, of Marketing Funnel Automation. Imagine my surprise when I was offered a phone interview… and then after talking with Todd, I was offered the job!
Todd’s as awesome a guy as you’d think he is. And I had the privilege of “channeling” his ideas into his articles and emails to his tribe.
Do ya think I learned a little bit about marketing, from such a master? Yep, I did. I also helped Todd launch his own popular podcast – I got to be his “sidekick” – which expanded that tribe and continued to build trust between him and them… and me.
As you can see in this testimonial video, Todd appreciated the way I was able to take on his voice. So did Scott Oldford, for whom I’ve also written, as well as many small business owners, from auto detailing, to finance, to holistic health, to dentists, to children’s arts programs, and many more.
When brain training meets research, you end up with dangerously beautiful copy
It turns out that all those years of teaching teenagers how to do research, followed by teaching myself a whole new business (with some help from some terrific online courses and coaches), ends up being a great thing for my clients.
I’ve developed a consistently successful exclusive research and marketing formula, which, when combined with everything I’ve learned about brain training and psychology, turns into a powerful, profitable foundation for my clients.
I’ll share my 7C formula with you… but you have to see that unless you dive into the psychology of your perfect client at each step, you end up with boring, drab, run-of-the-mill copy that just doesn’t convert. You can’t trust just anyone to write your copy for you. You need someone well-versed in brain science.
Fortunately, I’m not about copy and marketing all the time. Even nerds need to get outside!
My family of nerds (I’m serious: my husband is an engineer; our oldest son was in the Navy and is now an engineer; our daughter is a pediatric oncology nurse; and our younger son is a film composer, a total music nerd) is pretty awesome, and we love to go hiking, skiing, and boating. And traveling, when we get the chance.
Oh, and I have another secret. I’m also a musician. My instruments are voice and violin. And colonial fife. That’s another nerdy thing: our family did colonial reenacting for about 10 years, playing fifes and drums.
(Yes, I know “inexorably” isn’t a fourth-grade word… but we already agreed you’re not a fourth-grade reader, right? Besides, this is MY voice… not yours. 😉 )
So after being a performer since age 6, I’ve learned a thing or two about how to connect with an audience, whether on stage or in writing.
